In line with our mission to create road safety and public awareness, the nationwide traffic crash statistics for May 2026 have been analyzed by compiling official data published by the Directorate General of Security Traffic Department. While the figures reveal the current situation on the roads, they once again demonstrate the vital importance of driver behavior and speed management.

General Balance and Material Damage Scale

A total of 56,289 traffic crashes occurred nationwide within May 2026. The distribution of these crashes according to their characteristics is as follows

  • Fatal Crashes: 164

  • Injury Crashes: 24,575

Human Casualties and Regional Density

As a result of the crashes that occurred in May, according to data determined at the crash scene, 210 citizens lost their lives and 36,022 citizens were injured. When location based analyses are conducted, it is observed that the highest number of property damage only crashes nationwide occurred in Istanbul, where population and vehicle density peak. On the other hand, when fatalities are analyzed on a provincial basis, the highest number of deaths was recorded in Antalya with 19 fatalities.

Core Factor in Crashes: The Driver Element

When the primary actors causing crashes are examined, the weight of the human factor is remarkably striking. According to the data for May, the largest share in the occurrence of crashes belongs to drivers with a dominant rate of 90.2%. The driver factor is followed by pedestrian faults at a rate of 7.7%. This data is the clearest indicator of the need to increase road safety education and driver awareness.

Most Common Faults and Crash Types

When driver faults leading to fatal and injury traffic crashes are detailed, "Failure to Adjust Vehicle Speed to Road and Weather Conditions" tops the list with a rate of 36.8%. Along with violating speed limits, the failure to show flexibility according to changing weather and road conditions stands out as the biggest cause of crashes. When the occurrence types and patterns of the crashes are evaluated, the resulting picture is as follows

  • Side Impact: Represents the largest piece of the pie in fatal and injury crashes evaluated by the type of occurrence.

  • Rollover: Accounted for 14.5% of total fatal and injury cases, recording itself as the second largest risk area.

Conclusion

The data for May shows that a vast majority of traffic crashes originate from preventable human errors, particularly from a lack of speed management. A safe traffic environment is only possible if all actors on the road comply absolutely with the rules and act with a sense of responsibility.
